Queensland Cruising Yacht Club is thrilled to announce that the start of the 2017 Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race will, for the first time, be live streamed in a full visual broadcast available for free to anyone with an internet connection.

The broadcast will cover the pre-race, start and the first section of the racing to the rounding mark off Tangalooma. Just as the Boxing Day tradition of broadcasting the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race allows spectators to view the race in close quarters, this exciting development will allow spectators to connect with the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race on Good Friday in a way that has not been possible since the 1980’s when the event was televised on local stations.

Race Director Nigel Statham said “This is something we have been trying to get off the ground for a number of years; with the huge support of Gladstone Regional Council and in particular, Mayor Matt Burnett, it will finally become a reality”

“In conjunction with the already established yacht tracker, Spectators will now be able to watch the race from their computers, tablets or phones wherever they choose. We are hoping to also work with the Shorncliffe Bluewater Festival and Redcliffe Sails Festival to have the event on big screens at both events that celebrate the start of this race. This is a massive opportunity for everyone involved”

“Mayor Burnett tells me arrangements are already being made for screens at the Gladstone Harbour Festival and at other points around the town; I am hoping it will be like the fan zones which have become such an essential element of big sport events. We are both over the moon, it is very exciting”

“The Race will have its platinum anniversary in 2018; innovations such as this and the new welcome function in Gladstone are the perfect lead up to this milestone anniversary”

The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, organised by the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club, races for prestigious Courier Mail Cup, one of the oldest perpetual trophies in Australia that has been competed for on a continual basis. It is a race steeped in history but with the help of Gladstone Regional Council it is also one grasping its prestigious and glamourous future with both hands.
